|Daniel Lewin was onboard United Airlines Flight 11 when it crashed into World Trade Center 1. He was only 31 years old, and the crash ripped him from his wife and 2 children and a successful career as a technology entreprenuer.
I didn't know Daniel well. He was an advisor at a company I co-founded, an associate of our CEO. But in many ways, I feel like I know him as well as anyone in the world outside his family could.
I am also 31 years old. I am also a relatively successful technology entreprenuer with two children and a wife I love. I make Chicago/LAX flights with relative regularity for business.
On Monday evening I cuddled with my daughter before her bed time, and on Tuesday morning we were together again. Daniel's children will never see him again. His wife who has (like mine) sacrificed much in allowing Daniel's star to rise so high will never be repaid for her sacrifice.
I don't know what his last moments were like, and I don't know how to rid myself of the idea that now more than ever I am alive by virtue of grace and circumstance.
My life is one in a sea of hundreds touched by Daniel Lewin's death. I am so saddened by his passing that I think about it every idle moment of every day. I grieve that I did not make an effort to get to know a person whose accomplishments have inspired me for years. I grieve for his wife and children, and his family. He will be greatly missed.
